If I want to run my app from Unity it does not pick up the Beam Pro. I placed it in Developer Mode and tried both USB-C ports. Is there any other settings that I must try so that Unity will pickup the Beam Pro and copy and run the apk to it
See this is another scare point cant you build the app and adb it i to the system
Yes, that is what I am doing now. Using the Android File Transfer app on my Mac and then use the right USB-C on the Beam Pro and on Beam Pro settings which on that the port can accept file transfer to get the APK onto the beam pro and then run the APK from there to install it. It’s just very time consuming. Clicking Build and Run in Unity was so much more convenient
Yes its annoying but i can live with that personally but yes it is very annoying at least it can be adb’d which is some consolation ill be buying a beam pro next time i get paid and ill keep my eye out for a cheap snapdragon s22 so i can unlock all my features only reason im gonna bother this one last attempt at find some kind of working device even if not a hundred percent compatible is because i do need a vr180 camera all the rest of the beam pro is pretty low budget and low powered and other than the spacial camera i wouldnt want one and seeing what they did to those who bought the light dev kit i dont hold much bope this beam poop sorry pro will have much life in it especially for the lights i dont like the fact i have to commit to buying a device that doesnt allow one of the features advertised i dont care about nebula os and im slowly starting not to care about xreal as a company cuz it seems they dont care about us i thorougly regraet buying into xreal and i now have to spend more money on a low powered compute node but rather that and have a half working device rather than be stuck with a second samsung phone i cant use and dont need otherwise xreal dont seem to care about the most important people to them the developers iean they so backwards they told me id have to downgrade my s21 only to find out after exhausting all my possible returns tying multiple devices that were compatible but are not any longer i know ar is in its infancy and their will be teething problems but the lack of support for devs isnt a teething problem its company negligence imo
Sorry to hear about all your troubles with it. I guess Im lucky to have had a very good experience thus far, but I must say I was very nervous to see if everything worked. Im from South Africa and the Nebula app is not available in the SA region but the developer was very quick to supply the Nebula APK to me so that I can work with it. The biggest problem I had was when the company changed from Nreal to Xreal cause the Nebula did not want to login anymore cause it was trying to authenticate to a Nreal.com server. Luckily I only needed a new APK and since I already had access to a dev I could get that easy.
As you said this is an infancy tech and we should sort of accept that the first generation of glasses is not going to be high on the list for support. I think the 2nd generation of glasses is the true consumer products and I sort of expect that somewhere in the new future an app will not perform the same on the first generation and second generation. Ive already resigned myself that I will have to upgrade my glasses within the new year or 2 to be able to make sure that the apps performs correct on both generations
Yes i hear you fully i dont want to slate xreal as i really do believe if they support the devs better they are onto a serious winner just for the glasses form factor. However ive just bought light as i cant afford outright for the ultra but im considering saving a few months state benefits and buying a pair for the same purpose of testing on the device but the lacklustre support for devs is making me weary im already weary of the beam pro after their ditching of the light dev kit i wonder how many years will pass before the beam pro is abandoned. I get it they are a small company aiming at both consumers and devs so i expect teething problems but xreal really is missing a trick really the light should be fully supported by beam pro but from what you have said it isnt which is a shame as the ultra is not really an upgrade more of a side grade i suppose the fact i can develop mr apps and they will run on ultra is a trade off ill have to accept just not to sure i want to invest £699 into a company that practically ignores its devs either they just want to sell hardware units or they are completely missing the mark as doesnt matter how good the headset is if developers dont support it because they feel neglected all xreal have to do is put more effort into getting current and first gen devices working properly with at least the beam pro if not the beam ive seen the leak of the xreal x1 chip and while im anticipating what their next move will be i cant help but think is it worth investing in xreal when developer support is lacking badly xreal should focus on their software and maki g sure as many generations of glasses are supported as possibe imo the lights should fully support the beam pro natively as apart from newer components the ultra isnt anything new so there is no reason why the lights cant support beam pro fully
I know it is a little disappointing if newer hardware is not fully backwards compatible. I agree there is no technical reason why Beam Pro could not support the light. I think it’s a resource problem for them. Probably to get the light to work they would need a different version of the glass protocol to work also etc which might take a lot of dev time away in developing the hardware further. Supporting older hardware has a huge knockoff effect in that it must then also be supported and if there is a problem with compatibility it takes time again to fix. By only supporting the latest version they technically halved their maintenance and support relating to Beam Pro.
It’s a common thing if you take for instance cellphones also. iOS versions is backward compatible to maybe 4/5 years older hardware. Apple is a huge company with lots of money but it does not make sense for them to make sure latest iOS versions run on very old hardware.
I expect that probably the Ultra would be compatible with at least 2 newer generations of the Beam in the future, but we will have to wait and see. Might end up that Xreal company growth is so slow that they iterate glass and beams in pairs with zero full backward compatibility.
For me Xreal is currently the best way forward as a developer. They have the best growth in AR space with easy to use dev tools that is easy to pickup. My 16 year old niece wrote her first AR app in about a week with a little help from me, but she was able to pickup the dev tools and how it all works very quickly.
